Bistro Campagne is a warm and friendly neighborhood restaurant in the tradition of a true French bistro. Opened in summer of 2002 by owning partners Chef Michael Altenberg and Steven Schwartz, Bistro Campagne immediately became a favorite of the Lincoln Square residents as well as diners from all over the city & suburbs.

From the beginning, we have strived to capture and express that ephemeral quality found in our favorite small neighborhood bistros in Paris and rural France: the sense of welcome, ease, fun conversation & and of course excellent food.

The setting is a charming blend of prairie-inspired décor and lively Gallic spirit. Adjacent to the dining room is a beautiful garden that is a favorite place to sit during the summer, full of flowers and trees, a mosaic fountain by artist Francine Gourguechon & several cozy spots to lounge with an aperitif while waiting for a table. In the winter, the central part of the patio is enclosed and heated, and used for additional seating throughout the cold months.

It is the food, however, that is at the heart of a great bistro, and Chef Altenberg offers a seasonally changing menu of classic bistro fare that is based on the best ingredients he can find. His commitment to organic agriculture leads him to seek products from local organic farmers throughout our midwestern growing season, and even from organic farms on the west coast throughout winter. "Campagne" means "countryside", and so our name symbolizes our deep connection to the land that yields our food. Our statement of purpose is expressed on our menu and in all that we do.
